Note Worthy Musings With Brenda Stanton Archives - Claim Your Tribe

Claim Your Tribe

So there I was, sitting in my office at my corporate gig, googling around and miraculously I found it. I found my salvation. An answer to my prayer - an upcoming workshop that was titled: How To Quit Your Job And Work At What You Love.

Halleluiah! Where do I sign-up?

A couple weeks later I found myself sitting in a large room with a bunch of people wondering what was to come. The workshop facilitator began asking people to stand and introduce themselves and give a background to why they were there and what they were hoping to achieve from the workshop.

As various people stood up and spoke, my eyes began to well-up as I heard my story told one-by-one-by-one: “I can't stand going to work every day – it's just not fulfilling”, and “I'm spending my whole life either in the car or at the office with people I don't like when I'd rather be home with my family”, and “There has to be more to life than this, I want to make some sort of difference while I'm here – there is more to me than this job”.

As people stood up and told their stories (and mine), I knew I had come home: I had found my first Tribe.

Since then having a Tribe has been my saving Grace. Having a Tribe, which is a group of people who will be your support beams as you step-out and take bold steps on your journey, is truly (in my book) a non-negotiable if you are serious about what you want and you'll do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Oftentimes when we are seeking that “more” – which is a change in our world - whether it's to get back in shape physically, grow a business to a new level, quit a job to start a business, – you need people around you who will support you, believe in you, cheer you on, and who will push you out of your comfort zone and help you grow.

What happens most of the time is we tend to look to the people in our daily lives such as family and friends for advice. This is usually the wrong strategy. Why? Because the people who love you the most want to keep you safe and protected and they don't want to see you get hurt.

But in all honestly, if you want to claim your dreams, and your Worth, and live the life you deserve, then you need to find a Tribe that wants the same things and will understand you and support you in taking risks and making bold moves.

Again, by no fault of anyone, our friends/family unconsciously end up becoming dream-bashers as opposed to dream-supporters. You need to be real careful about who you tell your dreams to because people who aren't living theirs will often tell you that you can't live yours. Unfortunately that's just the way it is.

Now of course not everyone has this situation. You may have a wonderfully supportive network that cheers you on – tells you to go for it – and offers you sound advice. But most of us, on average, need to find our own Tribe.

Take a look at this quote by Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."

Profound huh?

Profound because it really forces you to think about the “who” you are telling your dreams to- and the “who” that is influencing your choices in your life and work.

Think about it. If you have dreams – dreams for a different life-style – a life-style where you are claiming your worth in all areas. A life where you are able to be authentic, creative, march to the beat of your own drum, stand in your power, have courage to take risks and call the shots, receive wealth through being of service, be bold and confident, make a difference on this planet, feel phenomenal in your own skin and claim all of this - just because you can and because you're worth it – it's imperative to, absolutely imperative, to have support and a Tribe.

So ask yourself: Who is influencing my dreams and cheering me on down the path? Who do I know that is living the life I admire and claiming all they want and deserve?

Anyone? Bueller?
