I AM - Real Life Cinderella Story - Susan Boyle
“I AM” ~ A Real Life Cinderella Story
I am sure most of you have heard about Susan Boyle by now – a real life Cinderella Story. She is a very talented woman from a small Scottish Village just outside of Edinburgh who has wowed the world with her talent when she appeared on the television show, “Britain’s Got Talent”. Her video on YouTube has gone viral to the point where there have been over 60 million+ hits. The world quickly discovered Susan Boyle as a very talented singer. When I had first seen this video a week ago, a friend asked me what my thoughts were on why she inspired so many people and why this witnessing of her talent had gone so viral.
My first thought was, “You can’t judge a book by its cover”. But it is so much more than that. Ms. Susan Boyle is an Absolutely Fabulous Woman, but ALL women are Absolutely Fabulous Women. The thing is, not all women know how to BE Absolutely Fabulous Women – we do get there eventually, but sometimes some may not. Susan Boyle’s story is OUR story. The question is how can YOU be Absolutely Fabulous? How can you have your very own real life Cinderella Story?
Susan Boyle is a perfect example… She lived in small Scottish village. Growing up she was bullied and had learning disabilities. She had to take care of a mother that was sick. She said in an interview before she went on stage, “She had never been kissed”.
· Through all of this she possessed her dreams of becoming a famous singer.
As she walked out on the stage, she admittedly was nervous. The judges and audience were ridiculing her, laughing and some making “cat calls” at her. Her image was not the expectant look of what a “famous singer” should be – especially for a woman. Their response to her reflected that and they were against her. Their beliefs were such that because of the way she looked, she was a joke. She even nervously made a few jokes about herself. It was probably her “learned” way of easing through the bullying as she experienced in her childhood. But then she took the microphone and began to sing, “I Dreamed the Dream”…
· She seized an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone and allowed her dreams to be.
· She addressed her fears, insecurities and nervousness.
· She did not worry what people would think of her.
· She did not let the laughing get in the way of her opportunity.
· She kept her focus on the task at hand – singing her heart out.
As she began to sing, the shock, surprise, possibly guilt and shame on the audience and judges faces were apparent. From that shock of what they thought would come out of her mouth and what really did come out of her mouth, there was a transcendence of joyful acceptance, tears and applause. She brought hope and empowerment to those people who have a dream but had let fears, acceptance, insecurities and learned doubt stand in their way.
· She let her light shine for the entire world to see.
You may or not have aspirations of being a famous singer. You may have many other wonderful dreams that will or will not carry you into the public spotlight. Watching this triumphant video of Susan Boyle was like watching a butterfly come out of a cocoon -- only better. The realization of your dreams may not be as witnessed as Susan Boyle’s, but it is your dream nonetheless. Imagine the feeling, as Susan Boyle did, when you realize your dreams becoming a reality.
