Imagining Your Future

Dictionary.com, Imagination: the faculty of imagining, or of forming mental images or concepts of what is not actually present to the senses.

Check-out the above definition for imagination and really consider what it means to imagine. What stands out for me in that definition is this part: “- what is not actually present to the senses.”

This statement of ‘what is not actually present to the senses’ is often how we all make decisions in life - believing what we see, not what we feel.

Whenever I begin working with a client whether privately or in a group setting, the first area we focus on is not their present results – but where they dream of going. And this makes sense obviously on where we’d start, focusing on your aspirations and where you want to go.

Yet, when clients sit down to dream and imagine a new future, it can be more difficult than they think. And the reason for this is because of believing in what you see as your current reality and Truth vs. what you feel in your heart.

And this resistance to imagining and dreaming of a new future isn’t something folks can actually articulate – because the desire for a new experience is in their hearts – but when they go down to put pen to paper, a blockage comes up that they can’t explain.

The blockage believe it or not is a subconscious block that when they put pen to paper to articulate what it is that they would love to dream of becoming, having, experiencing, etc. that they are deeply afraid that if they dream it and get their hopes up, then it may not come true.

Other parts of resisting dreaming of a new future and putting pen to paper come with unconscious commitments to other things. For example, the blocks I see with clients trying to dream of new possibilities, realities, and experiences is they are unconsciously afraid of making that commitment on paper because deep-down they know that writing it down gives it much more power.

Do you ever struggle with journaling – or documenting on paper what you want? Have you ever been given the task of dreaming of something different but resist the exercise of documenting what that could be?

If you do, or have ever felt this way, you’re not alone. It’s very common to resist writing anything down – even if it’s something you want – for fear of not being able to have it. Your head will tell you that you can’t, so why bother trying. Yet, your heart will never let the feelings of wanting it go – which is a good thing!

If you’re at a place where you’re ready to experience some changes in how you live, work and relate with others every day, then below underneath “Worth Work” are some exercises you can use to bust through your resistance to writing-out what you want and desire – and allowing you to take the pressure off and just dream and imagine your future.

Worth Work:

Here's some worth-work for this week: Below are some steps to help you begin to imagine your future – and to tune-in to your heart desires for what you dream of experiencing in the future.

Step 1: Grab a journal, a notebook, or just some plain ol’ white paper and a pretty pen and find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed

Step 2: Close your eyes and take some deep breaths and allow yourself to get calm and relaxed. With your eyes closed begin to imagine a favorite place you LOVE to go to think, dream and get immense clarity – then imagine being there – dreaming about your future.

Step 3: As you’re sitting there, with your eyes closed, take your hand and put it over your heart and ask your heart: What do you dream of having and experiencing in the future? What new experiences, people, adventures, etc. do you yearn to go on? What fun do you dream of having? What type of work do you dream of doing? Who do you long to bring into your life?

Step 4: After your heart begins to spill-out answers – open your eyes and begin to write down what your heart is telling you.

Step 5: If you face any type of resistance to writing it down, then here is a great tool to use to take any pressure off yourself – or worrying about “how” any of this will manifest. Use this sentence stem with everything that you write and it should alleviate any blockages:

Imagine if I could-
Imagine if life could look like this-
Imagine if my relationships could-
Imagine if I could have fun doing-
Imagine if I could work this way-
Imagine if I could wake-up each day feeling like-
Imagine if I could live here and travel there-

You get the point. The whole purpose of this exercise is to take any pressure off of feeling like you need to know exactly – or blocking you from believing things could be any different than they are today.

The point is for you to feel relaxed, joyful and to have FUN with it – and to not worry about how or when your vision or dreams could come true – just having fun in saying – what if they could.

Wishing you a fabulous week – and have fun imagining and dreaming of your future!
