On Wings of a Butterfly
Sometimes when we’re going through change and transition we have to let go of
things that served us well at one point but no longer fit for us. Perhaps
it’s a relationship. Maybe a safe career path or familiar way of doing
things. Perhaps an organization you were really involved in has run its
course. Seems a lot of people are in some state of transformation right
now…leaving behind an old way of doing things, an old way of being, familiar
territory.
It can be
scary. We often look more steadily at what we “seem” to be losing than we
do at what we’re gaining. It’s at times like these it is helpful to
remember this beautiful proverb:
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world
was over, it became a butterfly.”
I
have a lot of butterflies in my office. A beautiful blue glass butterfly, a
butterfly garland across my window, butterfly paperweights. They are
great reminders that no matter what transition I’m in at the moment, the
butterfly comes after letting go of the old way. It’s not always
pretty. The caterpillar weaves its cocoon, which to the untrained eye may
look dead. But hold on, because the butterfly is in the works!
What
transformation are you in right now? Do you need to let go of something,
perhaps even go into a somewhat dormant state to allow the transformation to
take place? This can be a scary thing but remember the beautiful
butterfly, and that you’re on your way to becoming one. Find a picture of
a butterfly or some other symbolic reminder that your transformation is in
progress, even though you may not see evidence yet.
Like the
butterfly, you will emerge strong, beautiful and with wings that will take you
to new and perhaps undreamed of heights.
Go ahead,
dream of the day when you’ll float like a butterfly. It will be here
soon.
