Releasing Resistance
Honor where you are right now, appreciate yourself and the situation for
‘what is’, and with that love, you will move mountains.
In the field that I work in, from my view, resistance gets a bad rap.
Many folks in the industry give-off the message that if you’re facing
resistance of any kind, you need to bust right through it. That if you’re stuck
it’s because of your own doing. And if you’re afraid to move forward through
the block of resistance, there must be something wrong with you and your will
isn’t strong enough.
Now I know that I’m generalizing but at the core of many messages ‘out there’,
this is what folks tend to take away from trying to change their situations.
Yet, the best advice I ever received about resistance came from one of my first
coaches who coached me through some major resistance I was facing – and helped
me see that if resistance is present, a real need usually exists.
That statement alone shifted everything because I was able to breathe, honor
myself and the resistance I was facing, and allow it to be there – and uncover
the real need - rather than hitting it with a stick telling it to go away.
What happens is – when your soul is ready to emerge to another level of
growth and evolution, resistance will come up with a vengeance.
Resistance comes in all forms. It will shut you off from receiving new
information that you really need to move forward. It will hold you back from
doing something that you really yearn to do, yet will show you all sorts of evidence
for all the reasons you can’t or shouldn’t do it. And it will also try to
prevent you from taking the steps you really need to take because it wants to
keep you right where you are – “safe”.
Yet, resistance isn’t bad – it’s just a protection mechanism that is keeping
you handcuffed in discontent and frustration because the real suffering is not
allowing yourself to accept ‘what is’. And the best thing I’ve learned to do
with resistance is: accept it, honor it, uncover the need that exists, and then
tap-into your soul for the Truth about what is really going on.
The truth is – if you’re stuck in a place where you want to move forward – or
have goals that you want to reach – yet what you’ve done in the past isn’t
working anymore – then the great news is – your resistance is a gift.
Your resistance is a gift because the stuck-ness and handcuffs that you feel
are keeping you back, are just trying to protect you from emerging to another
level on your growth path.
So if you’re in a place where you’re yearning to move forward – to broaden your
horizons, to take some big leaps, but are stuck and don’t know why- my best
advice is to accept where you are, appreciate how the resistance is trying to
serve you, honor the need for safety and security, and then follow what your
heart longs to do, not your head!
