Valuing Your Time
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”
Steve Jobs
The above quote by Steve Jobs, albeit short, packs a big punch in terms of Pure
Truth
In preparing for the upcoming 2nd Annual Creative Meaning Living Retreat, I’ve
been doing a whole bunch of content on Time –and helping not only the ladies
I’ll be teaching, but myself, as how you spend your time has so much to do with
how you value yourself and perceive your own self-worth.
And the old clique – we all have the same 24-hours in a day – may seem trite,
but it’s still very, very true.
What often doesn’t get realized however is the Truth- that most of you have
aspirations for how you’d like to spend your time and how you aspire for it to
feel – aren’t being met, then you may be living the life of an outdated version
of yourself.
What do I mean by outdated version? I simply mean that your soul (where your
aspirations live) is ready to allow another level of your evolution to emerge
and to allow you to experience new things – new relationships, new work
outlets, new creations– yet your Old Sense of Self isn’t budging.
Why is this? Why is would you be more committed to staying stuck in experiences
that don’t fulfill you?
In a nutshell, your Old Sense of Self is motivated by one thing – and one thing
only – keeping you handcuffed to the past. Keeping the ‘old you’, that outdated
version who is still living based on old value systems that were learned from
your past and your lineage –preserved.
You can call it Old Self Preservation - whatever you like – but there are ways
to bust through – and it’s with Truth. And that Truth is: trusting that it’s
okay to let go of your past. It’s okay to live a different life than your
siblings, your parents, or even an ex. It’s okay to want different things for
yourself and others.
It’s okay to continually become your Highest Self.
And as with everything that I believe from the tips of my toes to the top of my
head it’s this – wherever you are right now it’s perfect – and by you accepting
it, honoring it, and allowing yourself to make different choices moving
forward, you begin to evolve and grow into places you could have never imagined
you could go.
Check out the Worth Work below for some questions I’ve posed about how you
spend your time and see if any ring true.
Here's
some worth-work for this week: How are you spending your
time now?
Do
you spend your ‘off-time’ doing activities that don’t align with your soul, but
they allow you to zone-out, forget, and take-on someone else’s existence for a
while?
Do you have a strong need to waste time, but waste it doing things that make
you feel worse?
How much time do you spend watching T.V. and taking in the consciousness of the
people who are on the T.V.?
What are you reading? Is the author someone who holds the same values as you?
How do you know?
Who are you spending your time with? Do they lift you up, or drain you? Are you
anxious or calm when with them? Do you spend time with them out of obligation
or for the pure joy of being with them? When you leave them, how do you feel?
What ‘soft addictions’ or cheap (temporary) thrills allow you to fulfill any
deprivation you feel for fun, pleasure and new experiences? (food, alcohol,
shopping)?
Contemplate and write down your answers to these questions and ask yourself: Is
there an unmet need that I’m trying to get met through time-wasters? And if so,
what is it?
Then, you want to be very clear about where your heart yearns to go and grow –
in your life, in your relationships and in your work. Take some inventory of
what your aspirations are for the future.
Then, when you look at how you I desire for your time to FEEL and access how
you’re spending it – ask yourself: Will this activity take me closer or further
away from Highest Goal?
You’ll then know how-to act in accordance with pure integrity with your heart
& soul and begin moving towards a more fulfilling, authentic, worthy
life-style.
Have a beautiful, worthy week!
